Riddle me this....

Does anyone see anywhere on this coupon that I can't use it on clearance items? .

The reason I ask is because my friend and I went shopping at our local Charlotte Russe today. I had this coupon on hand, so I decided to use it on our purchase. All of our items happened to be sale items. Here's what happened when I got to the register.
Me: "I have this coupon that I want to use." *hands coupon to cashier*
Cashier: *takes coupon, looks it over* "Hey, Angie*, are we taking these coupons?"
Angie: *takes coupon from cashier* "No. You have to have a coupon signed from the person who gave it to you."
Me: *puzzled look* "Noone gave it to me, it was emailed to me...from Charlotte Russe.com. I signed up for their emails.
Angie: "Let me call another store to find out if we can take this." *dials the number to another store* [on the phone with the other store].....she said they emailed it to her........so we can take it?........and it can only be used on regular priced items, right?.....okay, bye *hangs up the phone*. Since all of your stuff is clearance, you can't use it anyway. Sorry.
Me: It doesn't say on the coupon that I can't use it on sale items.
Angie: Well, the manager at the other store told me that she redeemed these types of coupons and they can't be used on sale items.
Me: Okay...... *still confuzzled*
I still purchased the items, but correct me if I'm wrong. I know it says on the coupon that it can't be used in conjunction with any other discount offer, but doesn't that mean it can't be used with another coupon? Or is clearance considered a discount offer? What do y'all think? Was the cashier right or should I have gotten my discount?
*not her real name

Yeah you were definitely cheated. I just came from the mall about an hour and a half ago and all of my items were clearance! The girl had to ask a manager if they could take it, but after she said yes, she took 30% off of everything!

^^^ i emailed customer service at charlotte russe, don't know how much good it's going to do. at the time, i didn't want to stand there and argue with the dumb store manager about a coupon, but now that i think about it, i want my money, lol.

it depends...some stores have a policy on what constitutes a discount offer...a sales sign on a rack is a discount offer. A coupon is a discount offer, an ID from your job being used for discount at a certain establishment for that ID employer is a discount offer.

I tried to get that double discount and some stores do it and some don't. For example, I tried to get a double discount using that Payless Shoestore coupon at a payless that gives discounts if I show my ID, but not with the coupon. Actually it would have been a triple discount becuz the shoes were already marked down, then I would have used my employee discount AND the Payless coupon. NO DICE. So I went to a Payless somewhere else and ended up buying some marked down shoes and using my coupon. Thanks Chica!

So it depends on the store and what's printed on the coupon.

Oh yeah, I would have made a big stink. I would have wanted to speak to their manager. Not a manager from another store. It would have to say specifically not valid towards purchase of sale or clearance items. It's their coupon and they have to honor it. In conjunction with another offer means you can't use another coupon with it. Sounds to me the cashier was just being a bitch. Thank you for sharing the coupon I was looking for one. Go get your money!

I had a similar incident with Gymboree recently. They sent me a coupon for buying X amount of stuff for 25% the next purchase. It says on the coupon that it is 25% off all regular and promo-priced items...but then they would not accept it on sale items. Hello, what the heck are promo-priced items then? I called corporate and they said that, yeah, it was a typo, should have said no clearance, that promo-priced is something else (still never found out what). But they still wouldn't honor the damn thing. They eventually sent me a 10% off anything, including sales, coupon, but heck...that's not really 25%.

Basically, people won't honor what the coupons say anymore. No sales. Too bad.

I was going to suggest calling corp too. See what they say, because express states that their coupons cant be used on markdowns and if it doesnt say it, they should honor it. They were dumb anyway b/c they called another store to find out.

Yes! You should have gotten the discount! I would have pitched a royal fit! I applaud your composure!

A lot of places the discount doesn't take if the items are invalid. I've never heard of them not taking it if it doesn't specifically say "not to be used on clearance or sale items". Weird.

it's day 5 and charlotte russe still hasn't gotten back with me yet. whatever, i just won't go to that particular store anymore. the whole staff was dumb anyway. there was a store full of people and their only concern was standing around gossiping. what kind of customer service is that? that's why i'm doing a lot more shopping online than in store because customer service, especially these stores in my area, has gone down the tube.

Cashier was dead wrong!

Off Broadway shoes tried to do that to me when I had a email printed 20% off coupon, plus a 10% off coupon they gave me when I walked through the door and I picked a pair of shoes off the clearance rack. I had a look on my face that said you better honor this damn coupon or all hell is gonna break loose up in here! The coupon was very similar to the one you had except there was no verbiage that said I could not use it with another coupon offer. It was very general 20% off PERIOD! One sale person tried to challenge me but I shut that down and my voice was raising, so they gave me the 20% off in addition to the other discount.

Wow. Anonymous was being stupid but he or she does have a point. I've been reading your blog for over a year and I have to admit that sometimes the language is pretty bad (I don't mean profanity). You really need to make some tweaks to your grammar to improve your writing--it will definitely make your blog more readable and professional. Also, please please PLEASE stop ending your sentences with a comma and then "lol"! It gets annoying and just looks so immature!

Please don't find this comment offensive--I absolutely love your blog and your dedication to it! I'm just trying to give a little constructive criticism, and I just think it would be so much improved if you could pay a little more attention to how you write things. :)
