Cheap Chica's Topic Tuesday: Do you fight for your discount?

What do you do when you have a coupon for one of your favorite retailers, you get there and the damn store won't honor it? It's not expired, you're well within the restrictions of the coupon, but the store won't take it for some strange reason.  As you recall, I ran into this problem a few months ago. Would you let it go, or would you fight to get your discount?  Discuss.

I fight HARD for my discount! If I have a coupon and the retailer won't honor it I will ask to speak with a manager. That has always gotten the problem solved for me, I'm guessing it's because they probably assume it's easier to go ahead and give me the discount than to deal with a pissed off crazy lady. If that were to fail me, I would ask for the corporate office number or the regional managers number and call from my cell phone while still in the store. Failing that I would not make any purchases, and write a flurry of nasty emails once I arrived home. I try not to get snippy and mean with sales associates because they don't make the rules, and if their manager says they can't take the discount it's not their fault. I always try to remain as calm and controlled as possible.

i havent had that experience but should i ever run into it, i'm good for putting everything back/leaving it right at the counter. they need to logically explain why it cant be honored.

I work in retail and I can't tell you how many people just don't know how to read the small print! All the time people bring in coupons past their date and get mad at us for not honoring it. The store I work at will always honor it when its within the rules, but if it doesn't work for some reason, it's not because the store doesn't want to give it to you, its usually something wrong with the computer and the manager usually needs to adjust that. But If I have a coupon that just wont work I'll ask if they can get someone to check it out. But I definitely wont freak out about it.

Definitely! I don't bother with the store idiots I call the corporate office and make them mail me a check for the face value of the coupon. Works everytime! I will also report the store manager for not taking my coupon at the same time.

I don't freak out. I've worked in retail before,so I'm a little more understanding of workers wanting to follow policy. If I can't understand why a coupon is not being honored, I'll ask for a manager and/or go the corporate route as well. Companies don't want to lose a customer, so they will usually send coupons or giftcard when I write. I am BIG on sharing exceptionally good or bad experiences via email or phone call to corporate. As far as expired coupons, stores LOSE money when they accept them, so most of the time, workers are instructed to follow policy.

I just had this experience in Rite-Aid today. I had several manufacturers coupons for L'Oreal Paris. I used them to purchase a few of the HiP Eyeshadow Duos (which I'm collection) on a BOGO sale and the coupons are for $2.00 off any L'Oreal makeup. They tried to play me close in the store and said they could not be used on the HiP line, which is a outright lie! Well, I let them have it and broke them down right there in the store. When I got finished I was able to use every last one of my $2 off coupons. Most of the time I go the corporate route, but if am feeling particularly evil that day, I will let the sales staff have it - if they attempt to challenge me.
