Cheapalicious Review: Brazilian Peel by AHA

I never had a professional chemical peel done before.  They're a little too expensive for me, so I always try to find a less expensive, at home treatment. I've used the Anew Clinical Advanced Retexturizing Peel pads  by Avon and those seemed to work well for me, but I want something stronger.   I was given the opportunity to test out the Brazilian Peel by AHA (Advanced Home Actives). To tell you the truth, I've never even heard of this product, and how have I've not heard about it if it was voted for a Breakthrough Award in 2010 by Allure Magazine?  I have my face glued to that magazine every month, so I totally missed that one.  Anywho, the Brazilian Peel is made with 30% medical strength glycolic acid and acai berry, and a q-mag mineral neutralizer to control the peel strength.  It's housed in a syringe-like dispenser to ensure uniform application.

When I first saw this syringe-like dispenser- before I read the instructions and really paid attention to the dispenser- I was hoping I didn't have to inject myself with this stuff (lol).  I didn't (whew!). As you can see, the glycolic acid (clear gel) and the neutralizer (white cream) are housed in two separate chambers. The directions are simple, you just twist the cap, dispense the product in your hand, mix it together, and then apply to your face.

What it claims:
  • Removing the upper layer of dead skin cells to reveal fresh new skin below
  • Enhancing moisture retention and improving the efficacy of treatment products
  • Hastening cell regeneration to bring fresh, new, soft skin to the surface
  • Restoring skin's elastin and collagen building function to tighten, firm, and plump skin
  • Reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes, and dark spots
  • Repairing and reversing sun damage, hyper-pigmentation, dullness, roughness, and dryness
  • Reducing the damaging effects of free radicals
  • Soothing and calming via magnesium and sulfur
  • Maintaining a radiant, youthful complexion with continued weekly use
  • No redness or irritation

My skin before I started using the Brazilian Peel.  I really want to lighten up these old acne scars and have a smoother texture.

My experience:  First things first, I cleansed my skin and pat it dry. When I dispensed the product into my hand and mixed it together, I felt a warm sensation from the gel and the neutralizer. I then applied a thin layer of the mixture to my face and waited for ten minutes. As I let it dry, I felt a slight tingling, but nothing unbearable.  I also felt my face "tighten" while the mixture dried- kinda like when you apply an egg white mask to your face and it firms up. I then rinsed and applied my moisturizer (moisturizer is a MUST).  I noticed that my skin was smoother and much more radiant after one use as it promised. The radiance and smoothness lasted until the end of the next day, then my skin was back to the way it was pre-peel. I didn't experience any irritation or peeling, and that's a plus.  I've heard stories where people got professional peels done, and the redness and peeling lasted for a day or so. After four weeks of use, I was hoping it would've done away with these old acne scars that I have, but unfortunately it didn't.  Maybe with long term use, they will gradually go away.  Who knows.

My dark spots are still there (sigh).  Since it's been really hot and humid out lately, I've broken out a bit.  This is not a reaction from the product.

Would I use this product again?  I would, because I loved the glow it gave my skin and how soft my skin felt.  It gave my skin a little pick me up! Other than that, it really didn't do any drastic changes to my skin like I'd hope.  It would also help if the price were a tad bit cheaper, because $78 can be a bit costly for some people.  That's just my opinion.  But, if you're looking for a much cheaper alternative to a professional chemical peel, then try it for yourself.

Brazilian Peel by AHA can be purchased at Sephora, Brazilianpeel.com, and Advanced Home Actives.  A four week supply is $78, or you can purchase a single application for $23.

Have you tried Brazilian Peel?  How has it worked for you?

Where did you get that?: Michelle Obama's ASOS Africa sleeveless oversized shirt

First Lady Michelle Obama and her daughters were spotted  visiting the kids at the Emthonjeni Community Center in Zandspruit Township, Johannesburg, South Africa this past Tuesday.  The top that she's wearing is from the ASOS Africa collection, and from every sale of an item from the collection, a portion of the proceeds is used in support of SOKO, a clothing production workshop whose focus is to“create a sustainable and creative long term solution to Kenya’s economic crisis by promoting community driven, ethical and environmentally aware trade in fashion.”  Such a worthy cause!  Click on the link below to purchase Mrs. Obama's top!

Designer Way vs. Cheapalicious Way

Remember those Run DMC-esque glasses that Rick Ross wore in his "Magnificent" video?  Well, ever since my husband saw those glasses on Ricky, he just had to have a pair.  After months of searching on who the designer was, he finally found out that they were from Cazal . And he did not like the price tag.  Lucky for him, OC Shades has a cheapalicious version for only $10!  So much more easier on his wallet.

A special thanks goes out to Fashion Without Guilt for introducing me to this online store!

Cheapalicious Beauty: Jordana nail polish in "Tangy"

Jordana nail polish in Tangy $1.99

On my last trip to Kmart, I picked up a couple of bottles of Jordana nail polish in "Tangy" and "Mellow Yellow" (not shown).  I'm not sure if this is a new color or if it's been in existence for a while, but I thought it was pretty, and I don't own this shade of coral polish, so it came home with me.

two coats of Jordana nail color in Tangy, with Seche Vite topcoat, in sunlight

indoors with flash

The formula of this polish is pretty nice and it's Big Three Free (DBP, toluene, and formadehyde). It's a thick, cream formula that reaches full opacity with only two coats. Application with the first coat was kinda streaky, but with the second coat, it evened out.  I love this color. It's definitely going to be one of my "go to" corals for sandal season!

Goodwill Hunting: I thrift better in the A.M.....

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't like thrifting in the afternoon or evenings. Every now and then, I would pop into a thrift store after work, but I'm in and out of there in a flash.  Don't get me wrong, I love thrifting, and it shouldn't matter what time of the day that I thrift, it's just that I'm more focused and have more patience in the mornings.  Sounds weird, I know. I didn't have plans to go thrifting yesterday, but since the hubby needed to pick up some items from Tractor Supply Co. in Clewiston, and Goodwill just happened to be next door, I decided to join him for the ride.  We ended up leaving our house at about 2:30, and got into Clewiston at around 3:15.  We had lunch and then went over to the stores.  By that time, I didn't feel like browsing the thrift store, but it was either that or walk around aimlessly looking at lawnmowers and trailer hitches.  I chose the thrift store.  Here's what I found.

yellow blazer $2.99:  I've been obsessing over finding a colorful blazer to go in my wardrobe, and I finally found one that fits!  And it's lightweight- perfect for summer!

print jersey skirt $3.99

zebra print belt $1.99

wooden laceup platform sandals $4.99:  These lace up your leg, but I'll just tie them around my ankles (looks better that way).

another top for work $2.99

What time of the day do you like thrifting?

Lunchbreak Shopping: Summer wardrobe shopping at Old Navy

This week, I stopped by Old Navy on my lunch hour to see what new merchandise was in store.  I had $40 in Old Navy money to spend (I bought a Groupon this past weekend- $20 for $10, woo hoo- and plus I'd earned $20 in Old Navy rewards for using my Old Navy charge card), so I put those to use.  Out of pocket, I only spent a little over $15 for three items.  Score!  Here's what I bought.

fold over jersey skirt $15:  I love this skirt, it's so comfortable, and perfect for summer! One thing I like about this skirt is that it can be dressed up or down. For a work look, I'll pair it with a nice cardigan and pumps, and for a weekend look, I'll just throw on a tank, flat sandals, and fun jewelry.
faux leather thong sandals $12.50 online, but they were on sale for $8.50 at my local store:  I've been wanting a pair of leopard print sandals for the longest, and I've finally found some that I like- or so, I thought these were leopard print. On the site, the print is described as "tortoise", but they look like leopard spots to me.  They will do for now.
crochet cross front wedges $29.50:  I finally found a new pair of cream colored sandals.  I had a pair of cream colored wedge sandals from Payless that I bought years ago, and they finally gave out on me, so these new Old Navy wedges are their replacement.  These kind of remind me of the Stuart Weitzman sandals that have been spotted on the feet of so many celebs. These are very comfortable, but I had to go up one whole size in them.  I don't know if it's just me, but when I tried on the size 9, I had a hard time getting my foot into the shoe, plus, the back of my foot looked like it was hanging out a little bit.  Not a good look.  I tried on the size 10, and they fit perfectly.  Keep this in mind if you plan on purchasing this particular shoe.

Have you scored anything lately from Old Navy?

[CLOSED] Win This Wednesday: $100 ShopBop Giftcard Giveaway!

As you all know, I love budget fashion, but I love high end fashion as well, even though I can't afford it.  I've been admiring a lot of Opening Ceremony clothing lately, and if the prices weren't out of my range, I would definitely cop a few pieces.  Here are a few pieces from the clothing collection and a couple of the Opening Ceremony shoes that I'm loving right now.

silk culotte shorts $368.  Although, I don't wear shorts that often, I love the print and how relaxed these are.  Perfect for summer!;  peasant tunic $448;  Violet knot wedge sandals $315.  These also come in blue and black, but I like this color the best.  I'm drawn to the wooden cutout wedge, and I remember having a pair of sandals similar to these years ago that I wore out.  They were my favorite sandals!  Camila tubular platform sandal $381.50

Hopefully ShopBop will have an Opening Ceremony sale on some of these items pretty soon, but for now, I'll just keep them on my wishlist.  Or, I can con the hubby into buying at least one of the items for me.  Ha!
